Toyota bZ4X BEV Receives Major Upgrade in Japan: Extended Range Up to 746 km and Improved Rapid Charging Now Available on KINTO
Toyota's flagship battery electric vehicle, the bZ4X, has received a significant update in Japan as of October 9, 2025. The improvements focus on two key areas that BEV owners care about most: driving range and charging speed. The updated bZ4X is available through the KINTO bZ4X dedicated subscription plan.
Extended Driving Range

The updated bZ4X delivers a substantial improvement in driving range compared to the original 2022 model:
| Drivetrain | 2022 Model (Z Grade) | 2025 Updated Model (Z Grade) |
|---|---|---|
| 2WD (FWD) | 559 km | 746 km |
| 4WD (AWD) | 540 km | 687 km |
The 2WD model now achieves up to 746 km on a single charge (WLTC cycle), representing a 33% increase over the original model. This extended range addresses one of the primary concerns Japanese consumers have cited regarding BEV adoption.
Improved Rapid Charging Performance
In addition to the extended range, the updated bZ4X features improved rapid charging capabilities. The enhancements allow for faster DC fast charging sessions, reducing the time needed to top up during long-distance trips and making the bZ4X more practical for everyday use and highway travel in Japan.
New TEEMO Charging Service
Alongside the bZ4X update, a new charging service called TEEMO has launched in Japan. Key features of the TEEMO service include:
- Compatible with the CHAdeMO rapid charging standard
- Available to any BEV or PHEV, regardless of manufacturer
- Provides convenient access to a network of DC fast chargers across Japan
The TEEMO service complements the bZ4X's improved charging hardware, offering subscribers a seamless charging experience.
KINTO bZ4X Dedicated Plan
The updated bZ4X continues to be offered through KINTO's bZ4X dedicated subscription plan (bZ4X専用プラン), which features a maximum contract period of 10 years. Under this plan:
- Monthly subscription starts from ¥88,220 (tax included) for the first four years when Japan's CEV subsidy (Clean Energy Vehicle subsidy) is applied
- A one-time application fee of ¥770,000 (tax included) is required at sign-up
- All running costs — including insurance, automobile tax, and maintenance — are included in the monthly fee
- Additional savings may be available through local government subsidies depending on the subscriber's region
The long-term plan structure is designed to align with the BEV ownership lifecycle, giving subscribers peace of mind around battery performance and total cost of ownership.
What Is a BEV?
BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) refers to a fully electric vehicle powered entirely by a rechargeable battery with no internal combustion engine. The bZ4X is Toyota's first mass-production BEV built on the dedicated e-TNGA platform, co-developed with Subaru.
