KINTO BEV Interest Survey 2025: EV Switch Consideration Rate Drops to 26.1% Among Environment-Conscious Drivers in Japan
KINTO Corporation has released the results of its annual "Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) Interest Survey 2025", conducted among car owners in Japan who expressed concern about environmental issues. The survey reveals a notable shift in BEV adoption sentiment in Japan compared to the previous year.
Key Findings

BEV Switch Consideration Rate Falls 8.3 Points in Japan
Among environment-conscious car owners in Japan, the rate of those considering switching to a BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) for their next vehicle purchase dropped 8.3 percentage points year-on-year to 26.1%.
This decline suggests that despite growing general awareness of environmental issues in Japan, practical and financial barriers continue to slow BEV adoption among Japanese consumers who are otherwise motivated to make greener choices.
Government Subsidies Are a Major Deciding Factor
The survey found that the availability of Japanese government subsidies (CEV補助金) has a significant influence on BEV purchase intent. Consumers aware of Japan's subsidy programs showed considerably higher willingness to consider a BEV, indicating that domestic policy support remains one of the most effective levers for accelerating EV adoption in Japan.
What Is a BEV?
BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) refers to a fully electric vehicle powered entirely by a rechargeable battery, with no internal combustion engine. Unlike hybrid vehicles (HEV) or plug-in hybrids (PHEV), BEVs produce zero direct emissions during operation.
Why KINTO Japan Conducts This Survey
KINTO has conducted this annual BEV interest survey in Japan since 2021, tracking year-over-year changes in Japanese consumer attitudes toward electric vehicles. As a car subscription service offering Toyota, Lexus, and SUBARU vehicles in Japan — including electrified models — KINTO uses these insights to better understand the needs of Japanese customers and shape its vehicle lineup and service offerings accordingly.
The survey results inform KINTO's ongoing commitment to supporting customers in Japan in transitioning to more sustainable mobility options, while ensuring affordability and peace of mind through its all-inclusive subscription model.
KINTO and BEV Subscription in Japan
KINTO offers BEV and electrified models through its car subscription service in Japan, where all costs — including insurance, automobile tax, and maintenance — are bundled into a single flat monthly fee. This subscription model is designed to lower the barrier to BEV adoption in Japan by eliminating the uncertainty around ownership costs, resale value, and battery management.
